Hurricane Irma

We are closely monitoring Hurricane Irma. The safety of our clients and their attendees is of the utmost importance. Updates on how the hurricane will affect operations at the Orange County Convention Center will be posted on this web page. Bookmark www.occc.net/Irma for quick access.

The Orange County Convention Center reopened for business Tuesday, Sept. 12 after Hurricane Irma crossed through Central Florida this weekend.

Operated by Orange County Government, the OCCC closed over the weekend when it was announced the County would cease operations in advance of the storm reaching the region.

The Convention Center’s leadership team is working with clients and events that are currently coming into the center as well as clients that have rescheduled. All events scheduled for this week have postponed in the uncertainty of the storm and the unknown impacts it would have on Orlando.

We’re pleased to say we’ve made it to the other side of the storm and sustained minimal damage.

There’s no doubt you saw the numerous media reports about how our facility was the staging ground for equipment and machinery used in response and recovery efforts both during and after Hurricane Irma.

We were proud to host first responders, those charged with saving lives and restoring order after the storm came through. We even became the site of an impromptu wedding between two members of the Air National Guard as Irma cancelled their planned beach wedding.

Moving forward, our team is here to answer any questions you may have and we look forward to seeing you and your event team soon.

Leaders at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) continue working with the County’s Office of Emergency Management to track and monitor Hurricane Irma and its path.

At this time, the OCCC is open and conducting business as usual. In advance of the storm, however, we are making preparations for our facility to be used as the designated shelter for the first responders who will work tirelessly to ensure residents and visitors of Central Florida are safe during the storm.

Specifically, we are the preparing to welcome the following first responders, their vehicles and equipment:

  • Orange County Sheriff’s Office
  • Orange County Fire Rescue
  • Duke Energy
  • Orlando Utilities Commission

For all residents who wish to seek shelter, Orange County operates multiple shelters around the region including a mix of traditional and pet-friendly facilities. A list of those locations will be shared by local leaders once it has been finalized and the impact of the storm has been determined.

That information will be made available at the County’s website at www.ocfl.net/storm

Additionally, the Orange County Convention Center continues to work with our partners at Visit Orlando to share the latest information as it applies to room availability within Central Florida’s hotels. Information on how to track that online is forthcoming.

The latest information about operations at the Orange County Convention Center can be found at www.occc.net/Irma

We are continuing our efforts to work with the Orange County Office of Emergency Management as Hurricane Irma makes its way toward Florida. Based on the 8 a.m. advisory, the storm is forecast to make landfall in South Florida Sunday night. It is still too early to predict what impact the storm will have on Central Florida.

As of yesterday afternoon, the Florida Restaurant Show, one of several shows we have scheduled between now and when Irma is expected to reach us, postponed its event. Surf Expo and Imprinted Sportswear will be closing their event one day early to give exhibitor and attendees the time they need to prepare for the storm. No other shows have cancelled or made other changes as of this moment.

"As we enter day No. 2 of watching Hurricane Irma, we know the Orange County Convention Center and its staff is making the necessary preparations for if and when the storm reaches us," said Kathie Canning, the Center’s Executive Director. "We will continue to monitor the storm’s path and keep close communications with the Orange County Office of Emergency Management to ensure the safety of our staff and our guests."
